ski-jump ramp

ski-jump ramp
A takeoff curved ramp either on an aircraft carrier or on land, terminating at about 12° to horizontal to permit a short takeoff run to vectored-thrust STOVL (short takeoff and vertical landing) aircraft. The ramp provides increased safety in case of an engine or nozzle failure besides permitting a take-off with a higher takeoff weight.
